use the shorter/prefered `$.Deferred(function)` notation in examples.
fixed `filtered` to no longer leak into global namespace.

@staabm I wasn't aware that the $.Deferred(function) notation is "preferred." Is this preference documented somewhere?

I don't think this is "preferred" but it is an alternate syntax you can use. I think the examples written as is are easier to read and understand for someone new to the concept of deferred.
